On
December 7, 2002 Lieutenant peter Carey and Officer Daniel Harris of the University
Police Department responded to the call of an explosion in the tower 3 dormitory
at Buffalo State College. Being the first to arrive on the scene there
was no fire equipment in place yet, the officers entered the smoke filled
building and began evacuating students. The officers proceeded up through
the floors and found the source of the explosion to be a dorm room on the
eight floor. One of the walls in that room was totally incinerated from the
heat of the fire, and the walls of several dorm rooms on either side had buckled
from the explosion. The rooms were fully engulfed in flames and the
fire was spreading throughout the floor. The officers struggled against
the dense smoke looking for any trapped students. They found an injured
student in a stairwell and helped him to safety before proceeding up to the
ninth floor, still without the aid of any fire equipment, to make sure that
all the students had gotten out safely. As a result of their quick actions
the lives of many students were saved. |
